Lower Back Pain

Because back pain is so pervasive in our society, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal pointing out that back pain doesn't go away that easily confirmed what chiropractors have always known. Only 25 percent of low back pain sufferers had fully recovered 12 months after their first visit to a general practitioner, the study said. This low number is in conflict with the commonly-held notion that low back pain episodes go away by themselves after a month. This hardly comes as a surprise to low back pain sufferers who have been told by their medical doctors not to worry - the pain will go away on its own. In many cases, further treatment is necessary."

Doctors of chiropractic have long understood the cyclic nature of low back pain, and perhaps this is one of the reasons they consistently rate higher than MDs in patient satisfaction in this area. In a recent Gallup poll, 90 percent of all people who visited a chiropractor agreed that their care was effective.

Back Pain Facts & Statistics

Although chiropractors care for more than just back pain, many patients visit chiropractors looking for relief from this pervasive condition. In fact, 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time.1

A few interesting facts about back pain:

  1. One-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.
  2. Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. In fact, back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.
  3. Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic—meaning they are not caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer.
  4. Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on back pain—and that’s just for the more easily identified costs.
  5. Experts estimate that as many as 80% of the population will experience a back problem at some time in our lives.

Chiropractic has long been recognized for helping back pain. When people finally come to chiropractors with back pain they are often surprised to get relief from other painful conditions in the process, like headaches, neck or shoulder pain, and even leg pain.

All sorts of people could benefit from chiropractic care, but too often they have no idea it could help. Suffering for months and sometimes years before seeking our help, they live in needless pain on a daily basis. Often avoiding anything that might irritate their condition, they miss out on much of what life has to offer. Maybe you know one of these people personally, or you’ve been in this situation yourself. If you have, there may be good news for your future.

Chiropractic care can be effective for a wide range of painful conditions.
